"It's not over"
~ Kathleen (Kathy) B. ~
"It's Over"
I had recently ended a 17-year relationship/marriage and began seeing someone new.
I was feeling unwell and went to a Walk in Clinic, it was suggested I take an HIV test. I never thought twice.
3 weeks to the day, I received a call from the Clinic "your HIV test is positive" it was January 13, 2000 at 10:50am. I feel I went through a "textbook" response.
"Denial”
This cannot be possible. I am a heterosexual female who has been with one person prior to the new relationship.
"Fear"
I will not see my daughters grow up: they were 3, 6, and 9 years old. What if I have infected them?
"Shame/guilt"
How could I have been so irresponsible and not used protection? My ex-husband was seeing a lawyer and I believe, due to my diagnosis, a judge awarded him temporary custody and possession of our home.
My life literally spiraled out of control: addiction and homelessness.
After many attempts at sobriety, I was finally hospitalized at 76 pounds, drug induced delirium, and HIV Encephalitis. My recovery began and continues.
I have wonderful relationships with all 3 of my girls, incredible friendships and supports, and all of this I strongly attribute to my diagnosis.
